National Dance Week kicks off today, April 24, 2015 through May 3, 2015! We can’t help but get excited when we hear about foundations whose sole purpose is to bring awareness and inspire others.

According to a report conducted by the President’s council on fitness, sports and nutrition, More than 80% of adults do not meet the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, and more than 80% of adolescents do not do enough aerobic physical activity to meet the guidelines for youth.

For over 34 years, the National Dance Week Foundation (NDWF) has been committed to bringing awareness to the growing problem of inactivity. The week-long event features activities to inspire others to get moving to help celebrate dance and promote fun fitness.

Events take place across the country both big and small that anyone can participate in. Here are some activity ideas:

    • Start a kickline of your own! Grab your friends and capture your personal kickline with your favorite song. Post the video on Instagram or Facebook to build awareness while having fun!
    • Wear your favorite dance gear! Whether it be yoga pants, t-shirts or even a tutu, don’t be afraid to let others know that you’re proud to be a dancer!
    • Share your story with friends or on social media! We all know being more active is a good thing, but how has dancing benefitted you?

These are just some of the many ways to celebrate a great cause. To show our appreciation for this celebration, we’re offering FREE Shipping* on In Stock Curtain Call and Curtain Call for Class performance shoes and tights. Follow us on Facebook for daily dance related posts during the week!

It’s that time of year again, and you’re starting to run into problems.

    • Did another company let you down?
    • Does the style you ordered not fit?
    • Did you forget to order for an entire class?
    • Are your costumes stuck in customs?
    • Did someone enroll at the last minute?
    • Do you need accessories and props?

These moments of panic create additional stress during an already hectic time of year.  But no matter how well we plan, surprises will always come up.  “Oops!” moments happen, but they can be less painful when you have trusted help standing by.

With a wide array of styles, colors and sizes in stock and ready to ship in two business days or less, you won’t have to settle for something less than perfect for your performance. To make last minute shopping even easier, you can view live inventory of all styles online, so you don’t have to call and guess what may be available.

Accessories complete the look and add extra pizzazz to every performance, but they are also the easiest things to forget or lose! It’s exactly that reason that we stock thousands of hats, gloves, headbands and hair accessories.

We know you work hard…but when the unexpected occurs—and it often does—we can help you find the answer.  If you can’t find what you’re looking for online, our team of relationship managers and customer service representatives would love to add extra assistance.

  • Staying Calm During the Competitions: Yes You Can!

As the competition season draws closer, you know your life is going to get really hectic, really fast. Between the demands of your studio, your dancers and their parents, and your own busy personal life, you’re juggling a lot of things. Tension and stress are inevitable. But it’s what you do to manage both that really matters.

Finding balance is important, but often hard to do. One important thing to keep in mind is that you have control, even at times when it may feel like you don’t. Here are some tips to help you find the balance you need during these next few crazy months:

    • Set realistic expectations. No, you can’t do it all; nobody can. You’re likely harder on yourself than anyone else is, so cut yourself a little slack!
    • Don’t waste time worrying about what you can’t control—the weather, what others do or don’t do. Control the things you can; let the others go.
    • Give yourself a break. When you’re going in every direction, 24/7, your mind and body don’t get a chance to rest. Take a break—even if it’s only for a few minutes—to get away from the pressure we all have.
    • Avoid excess—excess food, excess adult beverages, excess anything. What you put in your body affects your mood.
    • Find time for exercise, even if it’s just a quick walk around the block or your neighborhood. Exercise releases endorphins that can give you a boost. Move your body every day, as much and as often as you can.
    • Don’t take things too personally. Yes, you will encounter angry parents. Yes, you will receive both compliments and complaints—take both into consideration, but don’t take it personally!
    • Let go of the “should-a, would-a, could-a’s.” We are all our own worst critics. Don’t focus on regrets or worry about past events you can no longer control. Move on.
    • Have fun! Never forget why you do what you do. Because you love it!

As you dive into this very hectic competition season, keep these tips in mind. Keep us in mind as well. Curtain Call is here to help with any last minute costume or dance wear needs you may have.

  • Finding Inspiration: Perform® Custom Gives You a Head Start

Inspiration can come from any number of places—some obvious; some not so obvious.

Where did Michelangelo come up with the idea for painting the Cistine Chapel? Where did J. K. Rowling come up with the idea for Harry Potter? Where did you come up with the theme for your last recital? Ideas, both big and small, can emerge from both the mundane and the sublime.

Competitions and spring performances are right around the corner. We know that you approach every performance with the strong desire to “wow” both your dancers and their audiences. That’s what dance is all about, the performance.

The outfit the dancer wears is an extremely important piece of the overall performance. It should perfectly complement the music and choreography, not detract or take away from the inspiration of the piece. When you have that perfect vision in mind, it is often impossible to find the exact look through traditional methods of catalog and online shopping. Sometimes, that special piece needs a special costume, and that is where custom design comes in. When you have that perfect style and look in mind that you can’t find anywhere, have you ever tried designing it yourself?

Approaching custom design can be an intimidating and confusing process. Finding a company or seamstress you trust to turn your unique vision into reality, while fitting within your budget and timeline can certainly be a challenge, especially if it is your first custom style. Curtain Call can help make the process easy with Perform® Custom. Log in to our website and select custom design under the Perform catalog,  the process  will lead you through  creating your design by changing fabrics and colors until you achieve just the right look for your performance.  It’s easy and inspiring—and fun!

With over 200 fabrics to choose from, the possibilities are endless which, we know, can sometimes be overwhelming. That’s where your Relationship Manager can come into play. Former and current dancers themselves, Curtain Call’s Relationship Managers are both sounding boards and sources of inspiration for you. Give us a call just to bounce some ideas around or to pick our brains. Our experienced customer service team is also here to help and can guide you through every step of the process (which only takes 8-10 weeks for a custom design!).

One great idea can lead to another, and another! Each performance raises the bar for the next and we’re here to help. By fully utilizing the power of Perform® Custom you can ensure that every performance is better than the last.

We’d love to hear what inspires you this season! Where did you find your inspiration for this season’s performance?

  • 7 New Year’s Resolutions We’ll Help You Keep in 2015!

It’s that time of year again—the time when many of us make New Year’s Resolutions that, unfortunately, are often forgotten as the year progresses. In fact, according to a poll by the University of Scranton psychology department, while 71 percent of resolution-makers stay on track for the first two weeks of the year, less than 50 percent are still on track six months later.

The most common resolutions, according to this poll, have to do with losing weight, getting organized and spending less. We may not be able to help you with that first one, but we have some suggestions and resources to stay on track with those last two. Here are some recommendations from Curtain Call for your 2015 resolutions:

    • Resolution #1: “I’m going to save money on costumes in 2015.” Take advantage of early buy discounts to bolster your budget right off the bat. You still have a few weeks to act on our early buy discount which will end on January 19. (And, since those first two weeks are when you’re most likely to keep your resolutions, this is one you can act on right now!)
    • Resolution #2: “I’m going to make sure to think about the ‘little things’—like accessories and tights—well in advance.” No worries here—if you fall short of this resolution as the year progresses, our in-stock availability will ensure that you have all of the elements you need to make your recital a success!
    • Resolution #3: “I’m going to think of some simple ways to earn more money for my studio.” Curtain Call’s class wear program builds a personalized online store for studios for free! Money earned can be collected as cash or used as credit toward future costume purchases.
    • Resolution #4: “I’m going to be more inspired as I organize my shows.” Browse our site, our catalogs and our Pinterest board to help get your creative juices flowing! (Be sure to check out our Trends line for some really unique ideas, or consider a custom approach—we’ll work with you and fill your custom order within 8-10 weeks.)
    • Resolution #5: “I’m going to find ways for my studio to be more involved in community outreach.” (Our Relationship Managers know about many great examples from around the country that they’d be glad to share with you.)
    • Resolution #6: “I’m going to focus on my own personal and professional development.” It’s not too early to plan to attend some key industry events to build your network, generate new ideas and stay on top of your game. A couple that we recommend are:
    • Resolution #7: “I’m going to have fun this year!” Dance should be fun and we’ll help make it so. We’re committed to working with our customers to find the best solutions for their needs and to make sure that they have what they need when they need it.

Make 2015 the best year ever. We’ll help you be part of the 50 percent that make their resolutions a reality. In fact, with the busy planning season about to begin, we’re extending our customer service hours; we’ll be available until 7:00 p.m. eastern time through the end of February.

    Happy New Year!

  • Traditional Meets New Age: Relationship Managers Rely on “Personal Touch”

    Author: Ashley Zimmerman

In a world that’s increasingly high-tech, with so many impersonal interactions taking place via email, text messages, and social media, it’s nice to take a step back and connect with people on a personal level. Curtain Call’s relationship managers do just that.

One thing that really differentiates us from other organizations—not only in our industry, but also in many others—is our focus on building personal connections. We really get to know our customers, we pride ourselves in serving as their advocates and we absolutely love being there to brainstorm new ideas with them.

From talking about ideas that make a performance really special, to making sure that everything arrives as planned and on time. From following up after the show to hear about how it went, to discovering new opportunities to not only meet—but exceed—customer expectations. These personal connections are priceless both to us and our customers.

I’m one of 12 dance relationship managers at Perform Group. We’re your voice to the company—to design, to customer service, to the president of our company! One of the favorite parts of our job is getting feedback from our customers to understand their pain points and to help remove them.
We are trained ballerinas, competition dancers, and hip-hop street dancers. From picking out costumes to discovering new industry innovations to make their businesses run efficiently and successfully, we work as a team to ensure the best experiences for our clients.

We also understand their customers. And, because we’ve worked with clients all around the country for 45 years, we’re able to bring our clients best practice ideas and emerging examples of what we’ve seen work for other dance studio owners.

Our relationship managers are all about personal touch so once you’ve browsed through our costume options—in one of our exquisite hard copy catalogs, or online—we love to brainstorm with you about how we can help make your next performance memorable. We’ll work with you to make sure that no details are left to chance, that your deadlines are met and that your order is exactly as you expected.

We also like to hear from you after the performance. That’s when we often learn the most about your needs and how we can deliver even more value the next time around.

If you’re one of our customers, and are comfortable sharing a story, please do. Even if you’re not a customer yet, we’d love to hear from you! Share your comments below, or give us a call. We’re here to help. It’s what we love to do!

Feel free to take some time to learn more about our Relationship Managers.

  • Perform Group Celebrates 45 Years!

In August 1969, Tighe King was a young, and newly retired Air Force fighter pilot who had flown 158 combat missions in Vietnam. He returned to his hometown of York with his wife, a young child and a plan to work at his parents’ sportswear business, King’s Sportswear, for a year.

Fast forward to today and that business, now known as Perform Group LLC, is celebrating its 45th anniversary and is widely recognized as an international leader in dance and gymnastics wear. The journey from fighter pilot to athletic designer and manufacturer might appear unexpected, but as King said, “Anything and everything I’ve done, I’ve done with a passion. When I joined the business, I wanted to see where I could take it.”

The young father immediately applied his military sense of order, planning and teamwork to grow the business. In 1969, he acquired Curtain Call Costumes (today Curtain Call®), tripling its market in his first full year. Nearly a decade later, he formed a new division of gymnastics apparel called Alpha Factor®. The company was renamed Perform Group LLC in 2006 and began focusing on both mail order and direct sales of specialty performance apparel. The company’s brands now also include Curtain Call for Class® and Aerials by Alpha Factor®.

What has—and will continue to—set Perform Group apart, said King, is a focus on quality, value and customer service. “Anything I said I’d do, I did it,” he said. “If I made a mistake, I corrected it. Both our competitors and our customers know that our approach is grounded in integrity and honesty. That has always been our base and foundation.”

Perform Group was one of the first big manufacturers to bring technology into the manufacturing process, from computerized pattern making and cutting to a high-tech production system. It pioneered the use of spandex in costuming. It also led the way to better customer service management, by installing relationship managers around the country to provide support to dance schools and gyms—anything from locating product samples to ensuring proper fit and sizing for athletes.

Along the way, the apparel manufacturer outfitted the U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics team on its way to its first-ever gold in the 1996 Atlanta games and the Russian men’s and women’s gymnastics teams in 2012, when they earned silver. The company’s dance costumes have appeared in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, at the Super Bowl and at Kilgore College, worn by the legendary Rangerettes dance team.

Although today not heavily involved in day to day operations as he once was, Tighe is seriously involved in strategic development and assuring the values of the company continue to be retained going into the future. “My biggest motivation has always been to do something better today than yesterday,” he said. “As time goes on, we want to continue to do what we do to the best of our ability.”
